How to make the best healthy popsicles?

How to make healthy popsicles

Frozen snacks and desserts are all the rage during this warmer season. Discover our recipes and tips for making the best, healthiest popsicles.

Why make your own popsicles?

The first answer to this question is: why not?

Making your own popsicles can be more economical and allows you to control the ingredients in them! Store-bought popsicles often contain a lot of non-essential ingredients and a lot of sugar, so making them yourself allows for more control over these ingredients!

Plus, making them yourself allows you to create a variety of flavors and types of popsicles that aren't available in supermarkets. Plus, you can make them vegan if you don't want to add milk or yogurt.

Ideas for varying your popsicles:

Use fruit (and vegetable) puree

This healthy version of popsicles is a great way to create nutritious snacks while also using up fruits and even some vegetables that are starting to look stale.

So here is the basic recipe that we offer you:

Ingredients

(SERVING: 12)

  • 4 cups (1L) of fruits & vegetables* of your choice
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) water
  • 2 tbsp (30 ml) maple syrup or honey (optional)

Preparation

Purée all ingredients in a food processor or blender. For a perfectly smooth texture, pass the mixture through a fine sieve.

Fill the popsicle molds and place in the freezer for a minimum of 8 hours.

*If you decide to include vegetables, avoid vegetables that are too flavorful or textured. The best options are steamed cauliflower, baby spinach and avocados.

Use a smoothie base

If you're looking to create a more nutritious, and therefore more filling, snack or dessert, using a smoothie as a base can be a great alternative.

The next time you make a smoothie recipe, make a double batch. That way, you can freeze some as popsicles!

We've also created a recipe for a Matcha Tea Green Smoothie that would be excellent in a popsicle version.

Use your favorite drinks

Following the same idea as using a smoothie as a base, take your favorite drinks and turn them into little frozen treats. Iced latte popsicles, hot chocolate popsicles, matcha tea popsicles, iced tea popsicles , lemonade popsicles, the possibilities are endless! The only important thing to remember is that the preparations must not contain alcohol. The popsicles may not set properly if they do.
